When you think of autumn what do you think of? Most people go to the darker nights coming in, the cosy evenings on the sofa with the family, and the leaves from the tree falling and creating a gorgeous scenery that we miss all too often because of how busy we all are.
As with every season, Autumn has a specific colour associated with it, which tends to be apart of the warm colour palette I.e burnt oranges, darker yellows, browns etc.
Being a florist we get to see a wide range of colours that blossom throughout the year but sometimes people don’t know what flowers are the best for the autumn season.
We wanted to share some amazing flowers that are sometimes overlooked within the Autumn season, but flowers that can be enjoyed just as much.
- 7 – Dahlia
Whilst Dahlia flowers are usually known for being a summery flower due to their colour, they actually flower from midsummer through to the first frost.
Their colours range from peach, red, lavender, white, yellow, orange, pink, and bi-color, making them perfect to add to your autumn bouquet. The shapes can vary from tiny pom poms to gigantic, corsage-worthy blooms.
Did you know, whilst the dahlia flower can be grown in the UK it is the national flower of Mexico.
- 6 – Chinese Lantern
These are gorgeous addition to an autumn bouquet as they resemble little hanging pumpkins as they are small in shape and orange in colour.
They typically bloom between July and October and so are a great addition to your autumn bouquets especially if you are looking for a Halloween themed bouquet.
They get their name from their resemblance to the colourful lanterns that are found in their native area of Asia.
- 5 – Chrysanthemum
Chrysanthemum’s are really a flower that can be used all year around, they are a popular addition to bouquets regardless of the season, however this flower really comes into it’s own when it comes to being a part of our autumn flower family with their stunning shades of orange, burgundy, yellow etc.
In Asia the chrysanthemum signifies life and rebirth, which make this flower a perfect choice for baby showers and new mum bouquets, whereas in Australia they are the official flower of choice for mother’s day due to their ‘mums’ nickname.
Across the world there are a variety of meanings for this very popular flower, but one thing is unified and that is that chrysanthemums are believed to represent happiness, love, longevity and joy, which makes it the perfect autumn flower for your bouquet to help inspire some happiness at a time when a lot start to feel sad.
- 4 – Protea
What? You may ask. Well the protea is considered to be one of the oldest families of flowers dating back 300 million years and hails from South Africa.
With almost 1500 different species the protea are not only a fascinating flower but incredibly beautiful. The protea has a unique cone-like head with petals that envelope its centre, growing in shades of red, orange and yellow.
Protea flowers flower in autumn and peak in winter making them a perfect addition to those autumn floral bouquets.
- 3 – Aster
Asters are named after the ‘Greek’ word for star as their bloom resembles a star shape. Asters symbolises love, wisdom, faith, and colour, and in Greek mythology they were placed on the altars for the gods.
The aster flower blooms in August and September and is the birth month flower for September babies, making it a perfect colourful addition to those gorgeous autumn bouquets.
- 2 – Kniphofia
Kniphofia flowers are an extremely colourful and exotic looking flower, with a gorgeous transition of autumn colours within the bloom from red to orange and then finally yellow at the bottom of their ‘red hot poker’ (as their common name is known) bloom.
Whilst native to Africa, we can enjoy these gorgeous flowers in the UK between June and October making them the perfect addition to your autumn floral arrangement as they mimic the shades of falling leaves.
- 1 – Sunflower
Who doesn’t love a sunflower? Whilst they are usually associated with sunny summery days, sunflowers bloom enough in the season to be considered an autumn flower.
Their name is derived and inspired by the sun and the flower’s ability to turn to face the sun’s light and warmth throughout the day.
The sunflower is number one on our list because of their association with the sun, sunflowers are well-known for being a happy flower and the resemblance to the sun, having the sunflower apart of your autumn floral bouquet will just help bring a piece of the sun into your home on those crisp autumn evenings.
